I have a confession to make. I know nothing about music theory – at least the mathematical aspect that makes it beautiful and pleasing to the ear when played in the proper notes\/chords\/meter\/etc. Those with that gift are blessed indeed as it is the language of the kosmos. On the other hand, personally I am drawn like a moth to the flame toward those songwriters who are blessed with lyrical talent. I wish I could write songs. I have the utmost respect for those who do. I am going to quote a Bible verse, then throw my hat into the ring on a controversial song that I have seen many, many intelligent people struggle to try and explain. Who and why someone “won” the competition that occurs inside the song has been debated for nearly 40 years. The answer is simple really – so simple in fact that people look right over it. Ultimately it boils down to this: words matter…<\/p>\n
John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” That one verse, so simple, is indeed profound. The first 3 gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke), known as the Synoptic Gospels, basically tell the same story from a little different perspective. John’s gospel, on the other hand, stands alone and paints its own picture. It is known as the gospel of love and it is intimate and personal. Just for fun, let’s call him “Johnny”… Charlie Daniels tells a story about “Johnny”.<\/p>\n
