Words matter

I have a confession to make.  I know nothing about music theory – at least the mathematical aspect that makes it beautiful and pleasing to the ear when played in the proper notes/chords/meter/etc.  Those with that gift are blessed indeed as it is the language of the kosmos.  On the other hand, personally I am drawn like a moth to the flame toward those songwriters who are blessed with lyrical talent.  I wish I could write songs.  I have the utmost respect for those who do.  I am going to quote a Bible verse, then throw my hat into the ring on a controversial song that I have seen many, many intelligent people struggle to try and explain. Who and why someone “won” the competition that occurs inside the song has been debated for nearly 40 years.  The answer is simple really – so simple in fact that people look right over it.  Ultimately it boils down to this:  words matter…

John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”  That one verse, so simple, is indeed profound.  The first 3 gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke), known as the Synoptic Gospels, basically tell the same story from a little different perspective.  John’s gospel, on the other hand, stands alone and paints its own picture.  It is known as the gospel of love and it is intimate and personal.  Just for fun, let’s call him “Johnny”…  Charlie Daniels tells a story about “Johnny”.

So…  Did you notice anything?  Almost every musician I have ever read who was interviewed agrees that the devil and his band of demons are much, much better than “Johnny”…  So — what gives?  Why would the devil hang his head and admit defeat if everyone agrees that he and his demon band were better?  There was not one word attached to the devil’s part of the song.  “Johnny” not only had words, he called in reinforcements – namely his grandmother…   Plus, he called the devil out, telling where he could be found.  “Johnny” had words, he knew how to use the words, he used them properly, and he made sure everybody knew he would do it again — anytime, anywhere.  Fearless.  But, they came from elsewhere – not him…  Therein lies the difference.

“It heals the soul to hear the sound of an instrument and a voice combined.”  This song by No Justice got me through many low points in my life when I felt like I was 6 feet underground.  I will be forever grateful to y’all Steve.  That album will always be one of my desert island gotta have it albums.  “Three Verses” is very close to being one of those perfect songs IMHO…  Words matter.  always have, always will.
